Jessica Lindsey At age twenty-two, Jessica was told that she needed surgery right away. She was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse when she was eight (mitral valve prolapse is an improper movement of the tissue of the mitral valve that prevents it from closing properly). | | | There had been noticeable irregularity to her heart beating, she said. Jessica underwent a heart valve repair procedure and received a Carpentier-McCarthy-Adams IMR ETlogix annuloplasty ring. An annuloplasty ring helps a valve close properly; it usually has a metal core with surrounding cloth and is sewn in with sutures directly above the mitral valve. Jessica's surgeon was pleased with the results following surgery. Moreover, because of this experience, she decided she wanted to work in the cardiovascular field and is taking classes at the University of Kansas to learn about echocardiography, a technology that helps doctors see the structure and function of the heart. | | |
